The X-ray has shown, at least, 7 puppies and perhaps an eighth. It's perfect, and we hope that there will not be loss during the birth, but in my head, I'm only ready for seven, because our vet was not sure for the eighth.

With the two first litters, we have gained experience, but surprises are always here !!!

In order to determine the date of the birth, the body temperature of the bitch is measured during the previous week, and when this temperature fall down to 1°, the birth is going to take place in the following hours. This method was reliable the two first times.

Thus, mondy the So Monday, August 12, 2013, in the evening, the temperature had dropped by almost 1 ° : it's for today, even if Coleen is in her sixtieth day of gestation. On the other side, she is huge. We decide to make her sleep in the house in her whelping box.

On Tuesday morning, the temperature returns to normal Coleen : strange !!!
On Tuesday evening, again the temperature dropped: OK, that's today.
On Wednesday morning, the temperature returns to normal Coleen: I do not understand anything.
On Wednesday night, the temperature is still low, and especially Coleen is very very rough. I decided to sleep with her keeping watch as she trembles and requests caresses permanently.
The night of Wednesday to Thursday was very long for everyone, Coleen is still very rough, all the signs are there, she digs holes, she is cooler than usual, she does not stay in place, but no contractions and therefore puppies.
Thursday, August 15th at 11am, Coleen has loss of transparent liquids. This is the melting of mucus plug. Whelping should start.
Then a few minutes later, it is a green liquid that comes : this is the first sign that the puppy should come out. We force Coleen to stay in the whelping box, but it is not simple because she is very rough.
Thursday, August 15 at noon, still nothing, the time starts to be long. I'm doing some research on Google, and I think the stuff in body temperature can make the yoyo in some cases. However if there is anything tonight, we'll see the vet.
Until Coleen decided, I read and reread the different phases of whelping and especially what to do in case I should intervene, from the cedia site.
Around 13h, we "liberate" Coleen from her whelping box, she does not want to stay there, she wants to walk, but still no contractions.
Around 15h, I'm on the computer looking for some info on Google, when I hear a cry in the garage, a cry that I recognize, the first puppy arrives. Indeed, the first puppy is on the garage concrete, I pick it up, he is alive, I remove his pocket, I rubs him a little bit, I put a finger in the mouth to make sure that nothing is blocking the respiratory system (and verification that the cleft palate is normal). All is OK. I bring the puppy in the whelping box, and of course mom Coleen follows me everywhere. Once Coleen lying in her whelping box, she licks the puppy to activate his body sytem, then I place him on a nipple for him to drink his first milk necessary to good immunization.
He is a small dark gray male with a weight of 590 grams with a small white spark on the head. The weight is less important than what I expected, because Dad "CHUKATTOQ ILANNAQ FOREVER" is very strong.
The weight of the pups is closed to the previous litter : well, the final weight of the dog will be closer to what the standard is searching (and I write really that the standard is searching).
Male 1 - De La Coleen d'Urok - The Alaskan Malamute
Whew, whelpingis started, we are relieved, but the next 12 hours will be long !
At 3:50 p.m., new contractions, a big dark gray female arrives with, too, a little white spark on the head : 610 grams on the scale. A pretty little girl !!!
Femelle 1 - De La Coleen d'Urok - The Alaskan Malamute
At 17:30, a second male, always gray, arises. He is very light gray, almost silver, with a large white spark on the head. It weighs 540 grams.
Male 2 - De La Coleen d'Urok - The Alaskan Malamute
At 6:35 p.m., a second female arrives. She is dark gray, no spark. She weighs 520 grams.
Femelle 2 - De La Coleen d'Urok - The Alaskan Malamute
We decided to clean the whelping box and change the sheets that we used for the first births.
At 7:50 p.m., a third big guy comes, it weighs 610 grams. He is gray and has a big spark to the head.
Male 3 - De La Coleen d'Urok - The Alaskan Malamute
At 9:50 p.m., the third and last female is born. She weighs 550 grams and is dark gray, no spark.
Femelle 3 - De La Coleen d'Urok - The Alaskan Malamute
At 11:10 p.m., the fourth male, and the seventh puppy from the litter arrives. He weighs 605 grams and is dark gray with a little spark to the head.
Male 4 - De La Coleen d'Urok - The Alaskan Malamute
Coleen has made the first six puppies with regular intervals of 1 hour - 1:15 and for the seventh the interval was 2:10 after the sixth.
We decide to wait until 1am to see if the potential eighth arrives. At 1am and nothing Coleen is very quiet. We believe that it is over and there will be only seven puppies.
It is time to clean the box, to clean up a bit Coleen, to clean carpets, to shower us and to go to bed. It's almost 2am when we go to bed. I take the iPad with me to watch with webcam in case.
About 4am, I woke up suddenly, despite my heavy sleep, I seem to have heard a puppy whinning. I look at the webcam with the iPad, and I see Coleen standing licking herself. I quickly count the puppies, and I count eight !!! Not being sure, I got up to check : I counted three times to be sure they are eight, and there is one puppy with no collar and a little wet. Coleen made his last puppy alone, without noise.
It is a fifth small male that weighs 610 grams, he is light silver gray with a little spark to the head. He has a huge neck and powerfull front legs. Surely a beautiful baby in perspective, as our Guizmo who was born the last.
Male 5 - De La Coleen d'Urok - The Alaskan Malamute
This time, it's all over.
SO, we have :
  • 3 dark gray females
  • 2 dark gray males
  • 3 light gray, almost silver , males
A very good result, fairly homogeneous, with initial weights between our two previous litters : smaller than the first litter, and larger than the second => ideals puppies ??? It must still wait for the puppies grow up to have an idea of the final structure.
